GE Water™ Compact Softening System: Smaller Size Delivers Big Advantages

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — (NYSE: GE)  The GE Water™ compact softening system enhances water quality throughout the home, providing consumers with many welcome advantages. With soft water, towels need one-third less detergent and come out of the washer 45 percent whiter. Clothes get softer, cleaner and brighter and last longer. Dishes are cleaner with less spotting. Tubs, showers and sinks are easier to clean. Soft water also helps protect appliances like washing machines and water heaters from hard-water scale build-up.

The smaller size — approximately 2 1/2-feet tall — and excellent occupied-space-to-water-softening-capacity ratio (18,800 grains) makes GE's compact, square-shaped softening system the ideal solution for tight spaces, and for households with just one to three residents. A low-profile design makes refilling the softening salt compartment much easier.

The softening system works by absorbing calcium and magnesium from hard water as it passes over thousands of tiny plastic resin beads inside the tank. The softener also filters out barium, radium and clear water iron. GE SmartSoft™ technology allows the softening system to "learn" the household's water usage patterns. Then, as necessary, the system automatically regenerates — using pellet- or nugget-style salt to cleanse itself of hard water minerals. The regeneration cycle can be programmed by the consumer to occur any time during the day or night, ensuring an adequate supply of softened water is always available.

GE Water compact softening system provides cost savings and convenience by reducing the need for frequent salt replacement. GE's exclusive "days-to-empty" feature flashes when less than 15 days' worth of salt remains in the tank, signaling when it's time to refill the salt compartment. Patented dual-sliding horizontal lids provide easy access to the large salt compartment opening and to electronic controls, which are easy to set, without the need for calculations or complicated programming.

The estimated retail price of the new GE Water compact softening system (model GXSF18G) is $429-479.*
